Why Product Aware? Product Aware was developed in response to a critical need identified by Architects Declare - a group of leading design firms dedicated to climate action. While the importance of sustainable specification is widely recognised, the industry has lacked a standardised, open-source method for comparing the sustainability of different products. This has made it difficult for specifiers to know what questions to ask, and for suppliers to provide consistent, transparent information. Product Aware addresses this gap with a simple yet powerful solution.
What Is Product Aware? At its core, Product Aware is a questionnaire and database app that allows suppliers to provide detailed, standardised information on the sustainability credentials of their products. This tool was created by sustainability leaders from prominent design firms, including DesignInc, Bates Smart, BVN, and COX, in collaboration with organisations like GBCA, MECLA, and Global GreenTag.
Why It Matters? Product Aware represents a significant step forward in promoting transparency and accountability in our industry. By providing a consistent way to assess product sustainability, it empowers architects and designers to make more informed, responsible decisions.
Moreover, because Product Aware is fee-free and open-source, it is accessible to everyone. This unique approach ensures that the tool can be widely adopted, driving real change across the industry.
